race reports
07 May 07 : Sugarloaf Weekend - Cleremont, FL
from Jim Smart(Saturday Sugarloaf Road Race): Cat 5, Maitland 4th, Alex 7th (great results, not Cat 5's for much longer), Cat 4, Todd 8th, Me 14th, Women 1-3, Jessica 3rd, Mandy 7th, Kristen 9th. Great results all around. One bad note, Tom H. crashed in the 4 race, but seems to be ok, i.e. he made it home and was chatting on the phone within a couple hours of the crash. Other Tallahasseans with good results include Joe S (HG, 2nd Cat 5), Joe V (HG, 4th Cat 4), and Rita (FSU, 2nd Cat 4). Brooke from HG also crashed, but seemed to be ok as well.
from Chris Marino (Sunday Ferndale Circuit Race): Cat 3: Great race 25mph avg. not too fast but steady. Several teams worked from start to finish trying to establish a break and hold the field back. The B & J team once again showed its dominance. No other team can quite put it together like they can. With 3 laps to go a break of 3 riders formed, not surprisingly, included B&J’s “Flaco” (nickname for skinny). B & J held the field from chasing. With 2 laps to go I took a 2 minute 30+mph pull to bring the group within striking distance of the break. No one came around but to my surprise we had strung the field out so far that we ended up in a 5 main chase group. B&J got in the middle of it our chase group and disrupted our momentum as the field pulled us back. With 1 to go our Junior Phenom Cody Johnson was able to attack with one other rider. With Cody out front I took control of the pack and held them back. Cody made a deal with the other rider and took a well deserved 5th place. Calling all Cat 3’s. We need you to be competitive at this level.
Cat 4 – the sky started falling 5 minutes into the race. We go in the car and did not see the finish. John Dascumb was the only member of Atomic represented. Not sure how he did. Mark my words – I will never do the Sugarloaf RR again. I am too fat and the hills plus the 95 degree heat make it the most miserable race/ride I have ever experienced. I would rather do another Ironman.
from Cody Johnson: A little touch up on the cat 3 story, Chris did his 2 min 30 mph pull with 3 to go i went at the finish line with 2 to go and had to bridge up to a group of 2 guys that were in between the break and the main group then we stayed away for 1 lap as we were getting close to being caught right after the finish line another guy came around us and the 2 guys i was with did not get on him so i had to wait for them to get out of the way then i bridged up too him we stayed away till the finish it was a good race the course was one of the best curcuit courses i have ever raced it was really fun.
from Todd Ireland: All the women raced strong; We forgot to mention the breakaway on the first climb up sugarloaf led by Jessica and led every other climb up the mountain. The ousting of Christian Sanders (Pro) from the break was great. Great job to all the girls for finishing strong.
from Jessica Tomasello: Well, I have to say that Kristen Sanders (Aarons Furnishings) dropped her chain on the first climb. Also, my wonderful teammates Mandi and Kristen did some fabulous blocking and told Kristen Sanders that they weren't going to work with her to catch our break--Thanks ladies!! Great teamwork-I have to say, I think we work together better than the men!! It made me proud to be an Atomic (yes, I did just say that, Jim).
05 Mar 07 : Georgia Cup - Albany
View picturesfrom Jim Smart: Just a quick note to tell those who weren't there that Atomic did well this weekend.
Jessica and Kristen tore it up in the combined women's 1-4 category, with Jessica taking 2nd in the tt, crit, and overall. Kristen took 5th in the tt and overall. They were 1st and 3rd among cat 3's and 4's.
Tom H. and Todd tied for 2nd among cat 4's in the 3-4 omnium.
Tom Gillis made the initial breakaway and rode fantastic in the Saturday crit for 7th place (I believe) in the master's 35+, beating up on a bunch of the spring chickens in his field.
Everyone else raced great, mostly stayed upright, with no injuries. Atomic showed in force and showed the Georgian's that we are a force to be reckoned with. We also got some ideas for our own race.
28 Feb 07 : Gainesville Time Trials and Criterium
View picturesfrom Tom Gillis: Cody had his best Junior race of this season finishing 3rd in a brutal 17-18 race. Kellen had to pull out with a mechanical. The rest of the jr's Graham, Tony, Nick, Alex and Maitland were shelled off into splinter groups. They finished their first true race of the season with no crashes and all their skin. 1st goal accomplished. Our next race will be Spin City in Orlando. Our goal there (for rookies) will be to finish in the pack. By the 3rd race I'll be hoping for a few podium spots.
from Jim Smart: ITT: Mandi 6th Women's 1-3, TTT: Women 4th, Atomic B's 5/14 3-5 teams. Crit: Cody 3rd 17-18, Tom 6th Cat 4, Dayne 12th Cat 4, Jessica 2nd Cat 4, 8th Overall Women, Kristen 6th Cat 4 Women, Todd 4th Cat 5, Both our women finished comfortably in a field chock full of fast 1-3 women.
from Jim Denny: ITT Men’s 45+, Steve Reker 12th/28 @ 24:52 and Jim Denny 20th/28 @ 26:25. TTT: Atomic A’s 8th /14 3-5 Teams. This is a result that I am personally very proud of. As a result of Todd’s superior strength the “A’s” lost a rider early. I was the next casualty at approximately Mile 7 of 16. I rode the next 9 miles as an individual TT. I knew my time (the third bike) would be the recorded time so I did not quit. I had done the individual TT earlier in the afternoon and was experiencing a great deal of discomfort. The Atomic “B’s” (started 2 minutes behind) did not catch me until 0.5 miles to go. My effort resulted in our “Team” placing 8th out of 14. We averaged 23.7 mph. I am very proud of this and proud to be an Atomic. Todd is a good friend and a good teammate. I enjoy riding with him and he will bring a lot of recognition to Atomic.
